On December 9, 2024, Google Quantum AI announced its Willow processor, a 105-qubit superconducting quantum chip. The headline achievement: Willow completed a Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) benchmark computation in under 5 minutes that would take today's fastest supercomputers (like Frontier) approximately 10 septillion (10Β²β΅) years β a timeframe vastly exceeding the age of the universe (~13.8 billion years).
Google's Hartmut Neven suggested the chip's performance "lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes, in line with the idea that we live in a multiverse." EDRM
Its important to note, this claim is highly contested. That said, I personally think this technology is so cool. Google's chip sort of working cannot be interpreted as evidence for parallel universes because its function is entirely consistent with theories in which ours is the only universe. But its still fun to watch as the technology grow.

Half genuine scientific breakthrough, half philosophical rabbit hole, and a healthy dose of "Google please explain reality to us."
As the saying goes,** βAny sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.β** And quantum computing definitely qualifies. Not because it proves the multiverse, but because it stretches our intuition until it politely gives up.
The funny part is that whether computation happens in one universe or many, our day to day developer problems remain beautifully classical. Bugs still reproduce faster than rabbits, deadlines still collapse wave functions, and production outages still obey Murphyβs Law.
Or to borrow another old proverb, "Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water." Even if there are infinite universes, someone still has to fix the build.
But hey, if Google eventually computes the meaning of existence, I just hope the API has decent documentation. π
