I Curated an Awesome List for SEC Filing Tools & Resources

If you've ever tried to figure out what hedge funds or institutional investors are buying and selling, you've probably stumbled across SEC filings. The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) requires large investment managers to disclose their holdings quarterly through 13F filings, and companies file 10-Ks, 10-Qs, and 8-Ks for earnings, annual reports, and material events.

The problem? There's a ton of tools, APIs, libraries, and datasets scattered across the internet for working with this data — but no single place to find them all.

So I made one: awesome-sec-filings 🎉

What's in the list?

I organized everything into categories that made sense to me as a developer:

  • 📊 Platforms & Tools — Web apps for browsing and analyzing filings (13F Insight, WhaleWisdom, OpenInsider, etc.)
  • 📚 Libraries & SDKs — Python, R, and JavaScript packages for parsing EDGAR data programmatically (edgartools, sec-api, py-edgar)
  • 🔌 APIs — REST APIs for structured access to filing data
  • 📁 Datasets — Pre-processed datasets on Kaggle, HuggingFace, and academic sources
  • 📖 Tutorials & Articles — Guides for getting started with SEC data
  • 🏛️ Official Resources — Direct links to EDGAR, XBRL tools, and SEC developer resources

Why I built this

I've been working on 13F Insight, a platform for tracking institutional investor holdings. While building it, I kept bookmarking useful tools and resources. Eventually my bookmarks folder got out of hand, so I figured — why not turn it into an awesome list?

The finance/investing space has some great awesome lists already (shoutout to awesome-quant!), but none focused specifically on SEC filings. Given how important this data is for investors, researchers, and fintech builders, it felt like a gap worth filling.

Contributing

The list is still growing! If you know of a tool, library, or dataset that works with SEC filings, feel free to open a PR. I'm especially looking for:

  • Tools in languages beyond Python
  • Academic research datasets
  • Self-hosted alternatives to commercial platforms

Hope it's useful to someone out there! Happy to hear feedback. 🚀
